Carbon Accounting and How it Affects Business

In today's international economy, it has become widely accepted that the effect of business is having a large and negative effect on the environment. As such, many businesses are becoming wise to the fact that they need to reduce this impact; namely by keeping track of their CO2 emissions and highlighting ways that they can be reduced. Keeping track of this effect is called carbon accounting.

This article will look at how carbon accounting works, and what tools and technology is used in order to log every kind of CO2 emission. Certainly a new part of the economy, a lot of companies have sprung up to offer this service - so it shows a lot of firms are taking this seriously.

Transport

Transport is of course a massive part of CO2 emissions for a number of companies. Keeping track of this is very difficult, but if you source the appropriate carbon accounting software, you should be able to do it without too many problems. In terms of reducing transport, it al l really comes down to efficiency; i.e. bringing down the amount of packaging used in transport and in and around the actual products themselves. But the first stage has to be carbon accounting.

Office

Cutting back the CO 2 emissions of the office might be slightly more difficult. But in any instance, the first stage has to be carbon accounting. Again, a good piece of software should make this easy - and that software is likely to fit in any area of a business; i.e. transport etc. The office might contribute a lot more then people think - especially if servers are hosted there. The CO2 from servers is thought to be one of the major growing contributors, and so carbon accounting is likely to highlight this as an issue for some companies.

Solutions for this might include training people to use less energy; in terms of lighting, heating -even boiling water for teas and coffees. But once more, the first stage is to identify where the CO2 is coming from and how much is being expelled.

As well as software options, there are companies that offer carbon accounting services which might make the whole process easier; as going it alone might be confusing. Buying in expertise that knows in-depth data as regards legislation and as regards what is the best way to move forward and reduce the companies carbon footprint is.

In any event carbon accounting is something that is likely to be with us for a long time to come, and it is better that companies start to deal with potential solutions sooner rather than later.
